The program provides transportation services for approximately 2,000 senior citizens, which includes persons who are physically mobile, those whose sole means of mobility is a wheelchair, and those who are indigent.
The program utilizes the following combination of transportation services to meet the needs of the senior community: The Taxi Discount Program which issues taxi discount coupons to senior citizens enabling them to access public taxi transportation any hour of the day, and any day of the week; The Wheelchair Transportation Program issues vouchers good for wheelchair transportation anywhere in Marion county. The service is provided by Yellow Cab Wheelchair Service; The Essential Needs Transportation Program utilizes volunteer & staff drivers, to transport senior citizens to doctors' offices, clinics, hospitals, government services, or shopping for food and other necessary items; and, a Grocery /Shopping Shuttle Service which provides daily, time based transportation for twenty (20) senior apartment complexes to grocery stores and shopping centers. The program coordinates with the City of Indianapolis transit system, and other not-for-profit agencies.
All of these services are designed to address the problems caused by lack of transportation, including isolation and limited access to needed services. Consumers have opportunities to provide input on these programs, both by frequent individual contact with program staff, and through the annual survey process. The program receives funding from Federal tax sources i.e. The Older Americans' Act and State tax sources i.e. The Older Hoosiers' Act. The funds are administered through CICOA The Access Network. United Way of Central Indiana, and private donations also fund the programs. Client donations are generous and key sources of donated income because clients know the value of the programs and participate in financing it.
This is a program of the Indianapolis Senior Citizens Center, Inc. located at:
708 E. Michigan Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46202.
