The Taxi Discount Program began as a pilot project in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1978, and is believed to be the second oldest program of its type in the nation.
The basis for its development was to enable senior citizens to reach necessary services, especially after 5 p.m. on weekdays, and on weekends when social service transportation programs are typically not in operation and for those on a bus line when service is infrequent or not running.
The program issues 1,000 pre-numbered, $10.00 Taxi Discount Coupon booklets each month, on a first come, first served basis. Each coupon book contains ten (10) $1.00 coupons, which are surrendered at face value for payment of the metered fare. Companies that honor these coupons are listed on the inside front cover of the coupon booklet. This program is significant because it allows a senior citizen the opportunity to choose the date, time and destination for their trip.
